China Painting- Over Glazes & Lusters Course

This course is designed for all levels of potters, painters and creatives! Using china paints (an overglaze, oil based enamel technique) and real metal lusters to decorate ceramic wares. 

Class is held on Sundays from Aug 2nd- 23rd 10am-12:30 pm.

Student Capacity: 3 min- 12 max.

Course Goal:

The goal of this course is to demonstrate and help give you the skills and knowledge needed to make your own beautiful china painting. You will learn how to paint with overglaze enamels and shiny overglaze lusters. You’ll be guided through painting on ceramic work from start to finish.

Your Instructor:

Janelle Kinsey is a local ceramicist, sculptor and painter. She has over seven years of china painting/ over glazing experience. She first learned the technique during a study abroad program in Jingedhezen China in 2019. Since then her china painting has been a regular part of her art practice. She shows up in the studio with enthusiasm to bring out people's creative talents, and believes that art should be for everyone. 

Class Materials 

Students Need to Acquire on their own:

• 3M Half Mask Respirator with Dust and Fume Carts (Pink and Yellow)-  Like this Here

• A Sketch Book/ Notebook

• *Optional* - Bring your own finished glazed & fired ceramic work to paint on. Plain white glaze is best. 

We will provide for you

• China paint pigments

• A variety of painting mediums

• Brushes

• Nitrile Gloves

• Paint thinner/ Cleaner

• Tiles to paint on- yours to keep!

  • Four Small Test Tiles (4” x 4”)

  • Four Medium sized tiles (6” x 6”)

-Handmade Blanks to paint on. Vases, Mugs, that kind of thing. $10-40 price range.
