This class will include 6 week guided instruction for both sculptural hand building and wheel throwing, plus unlimited studio hours a week during business hours for students to tend to their wares between classes. A great way to try out the studio and get to know some cool folks. This class will cover all stages and processes of basic ceramic works, from wet work to final glazing. Whether you are new to ceramics, or just looking for support/encouragement, this class is sure to check all the boxes.
Instructed by Lydia Hicks; a PNW based and inspired ceramist who has 11 years of ceramics experience and is passionate about fostering community and making beautiful pottery. You might find them making functional pieces on the wheel, Raku or wood-firing, or learning more about the multitude of other techniques potters utilize.
Class is held on Wednesdays from 6-8pm

Intro to clay with Leilani

Come discover the joy of working with clay! This 6-week beginner pottery course meets Tuesday evenings and is designed for students who are new to ceramics or looking to build a strong foundation in pottery. Throughout the course, students will explore both handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques, learning the fundamentals of shaping, refining, glazing, and finishing their work. Structured skill-building assignments will help students develop confidence and technique, while still leaving plenty of room for creative freedom and personal expression.
Students will learn how to prepare and work with clay, create functional and decorative forms, apply glazes, and understand the clay process from start to finish. Students are provided with unlimited open studio hours during business hours to tend to their wares between classes.
Instructed by Leilani Coleman; a potter who received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Colorado. For the past six years, she has worked as a full-time artist, creating, teaching, and selling her artwork. In May of this year, Leilani moved from Colorado to the Portland area and is excited to grow her creative practice, and build meaningful connections within the local arts community while sharing her love for the medium with new students.

wheel throwing for the home w/Lyd
$275
Class level- beginner - intermediate, some throwing experience is helpful. This course will include 5 weeks of guided instruction to help you successfully make your own custom kitchenware set for your home. In this wheel throwing centered class each student will complete a matching dinnerware set including 2 plates, 2 bowls, 2 mugs, spoon & spoon rest.
Each student will work on a comprehensive design plan too create their unique tableware set, I.e colors, stamped or carved designs etc. repeated throughout their set.

armature based sculpture

This class is the next step for anyone who wants to explore building on an armature (like those who made spirit animal masks and want to delve a little deeper!) Both Erin and Nathan will guide you as you construct a paper armature and build a creature- whether it’s a fantastical beast or real animal is up to you. Learn some of the more critical nuances of creating a larger piece; managing dryness levels while working longer, more advanced attachment skills, and troubleshooting issues to make your dream come to life.
ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME! This class includes unlimited open studio time to tend to your beast during business hours (9am-7pm+) Pieces can be raku or mid-fire (cone 6)

Clay, Clay & CLay! with Mike
$225
Learn and create with three DIFFERENT versions of soft and pliable sculpting! Mike is a lifelong (several decades!) lover of the therapeutic joys of hand building. A sculptor, animator and educator who has taught at OMSI + worked with NW Film Center, PNCA, Claymation Studio (Laika) + a whole heap of other rad experience, Mike is on board to see you through the processes of creating visually compelling characters that are full of expression and movement. Watching him work is truly mesmerizing and we couldn’t be more thrilled to offer this class.
The class is called “clay, clay & clay” because Mike will go over the different benefits and processes of three very different kinds of clay: modeling clay, polymer clay (Sculpey etc) and earthenware clay. Each has its own place and purpose, and for people who find the wet/dry dance of earthen clays exhausting, polymer clay is a whole new world (cue Ariel singing).
